labor day

Why is May 1 the date for International Workers’ Day? It all goes back to a strike by workers in Chicago in 1886. The workers were on strike to demand an eight-hour workday, and after police fired on them, the movement spread throughout the country (and later, internationally). In 1889, it was decided that the day would be commemorated every year on May 1—and it has been since.

The date commemorates a historic event in U.S. labor history that happened in Chicago in 1886: About 300,000 workers went on strike for an eight-hour work day, but police eventually shot and killed four of them during a confrontation over the issue on May 3. The following day, May 4, another protest was organized and a bomb was thrown at police. Police then fired into the crowd and killed more people. Several anarchists were later charged with murder and executed (though some historians believe an agent provocateur may have been responsible for the bombing). So in 1889, the Second International (an organization that allowed countries to work together to promote labor rights) decided that May 1 should be celebrated as International Workers' Day to commemorate the event, as well as to call for an end to exploitative working conditions around the world.

Labor Day has an interesting history in the United States. The first Labor Day was celebrated in 1882, when 10,000 workers marched in New York City, and then states began passing legislation making Labor Day a legal holiday. In 1887, Oregon became the first state to make it an official holiday—though at the time no one knew it would later be celebrated across the nation. It wasn't until 1894, however, that President Grover Cleveland declared it a national holiday.
